In addition, the process must be tailored to the particular site and the grower’s intentions. Unlike dormant pruning or other annual activities, designing and establishing a vineyard must be done correctly the first time. Vineyard establishment involves careful planning, thorough site preparation, vineyard design, planting, and trellis construction. Vegetative identification characteristics include: rolled vernation, a very short membranous ligule, and leaf blades that are shorter and broader than most other grasses. After frost, the foliage and wiry stems turn a distinctive light tan in color and persist through the winter.
